A Study to Investigate the Safety, Reactogenicity, and Immunogenicity of a Vaccine to prevent Ebola-Bundibugyo Virus Disease

For demographics: Adults

Purpose

We are looking for participants to take part in a clinical trial evaluating an mRNA vaccine against Bundibugyo ebolavirus (BEBOV) in adults. This study will investigate the vaccine for safety and immune response. 

About Bundibugyo ebolavirus

Bundibugyo ebolavirus (BEBOV) is one of 6 species of ebolavirus. It is highly contagious and can be passed from person to person through bodily fluids.  

As of May 2026, a confirmed outbreak of BEBOV in the Democratic Republic of Congo has included over a thousand suspected cases and hundreds of suspected deaths.  

Though there are existing preventions against other Ebola viruses, Bundibugyo ebolavirus (BEBOV) has no licensed vaccine or treatments. This represents an urgent unmet public health need.

Participation Criteria

  • Ages 18- 65 years 
  • Healthy as determined by medical evaluation including medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests (Participants with clinically stable chronic medical conditions are permitted) 
  • BMI of 18 – 39 kg/m2 
  • Not breastfeeding or pregnant 
  • If able to become pregnant, willing to practice adequate contraception for the 3 months after the study vaccine 
  • No previous exposure to Ebola or Ebola vaccines 

 

Additional criteria will be addressed during the screening process.

Participation Details

  • screening visit for eligibility 
  • receiving either the study vaccine or a saltwater injection (placebo) 
  • recording any reactions at home with an electronic Diary 
  • 6 follow-up clinic visits (including bloodwork) 
  • Total participation lasts 12 months
